D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, made history by defeating the world number three team, Australia, with a score of 75-62 at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This monumental victory marks Nigeria’s first Olympic win in 20 years, with their last triumph being against South Korea in 2004.
This sterling performance continued as they defeated Canada 79-70 in the final group game on Monday. The victory earned D’Tigress their first-ever appearance in the quarter-final of the Olympics basketball tournament.
Ezinne Kalu led the charge with a stellar performance, and the team’s strong defensive play has been a game-changer. Amy Okonkwo’s three-pointer in the final minutes was pivotal in calming the team’s nerves and securing their victory.
Coach Rena Wakama’s leadership and the players’ cohesion were pivotal in this historic achievement.
