CHEFCHAOUEN: A visit to the beautiful Blue City of Morrocco will leave you speechless
Have you seen a city with different shades of a particular color? The city of Chefchaouen is a unique city in Morocco.
Chefchaouen, also known as Chaouen, is a city in Northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the Province of the same name and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue. Chefchaouen is situated just inland from Tangier and Tétouan.
The city was founded in 1471 as a small kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami. The Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled there after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times.
They paint the entire small city in distinctive shades of blue
The tradition of painting the buildings stems from the Jewish community who settled there in the 15th century after being expelled from Spain. Back then, it was believed that weaving dyed blue thread into prayer shawls would remind people of God’s power.
Regularly repainted, the walled city stands out proudly amongst the plethora of tan-colored towns and mountains around it.
For Chefchaouen, it really is no exaggeration to say that every street and alleyway is majestic. Meandering through them, you’ll see that taking an awful photograph or neglecting to feel in amazement is a difficulty.
